Privacy policy

What this site collects, why it collects it, how long it is kept, and how to have it removed.

The short version

The calculators work out your figures in your browser, and what you type into them is never sent anywhere unless you choose to submit a form. Three forms on this site do send data to the server: the mailing-list form on the homepage, the speaking enquiry form, and the report form on the dental calculator. Nothing collected here is sold, rented or shared for advertising. One email address, info@timeultimatecurrency.com, handles every request to see or delete your data.

1. Who is responsible

This site, timeultimatecurrency.com, is operated by Mert Sahin as an individual author, publishing the book Time: The Ultimate Currency. For the purposes of data protection law, Mert Sahin is the controller of the personal data described below.

All contact, including every request to see or delete your data, goes to info@timeultimatecurrency.com. A postal address is provided on request to anyone who needs one to make a formal request.

The site is operated from the United States, and this policy is written to meet United States requirements including the California Consumer Privacy Act. Visitors from the European Economic Area and the United Kingdom have the additional rights set out in section 8.

2. What is collected

Three forms on this site send information to the server, and you choose whether to fill in any of them. Two other things happen without a choice on your part: the web host writes a line to its access log, and the analytics script described in section 5 records the visit.

The mailing-list form

When you submit your email address on the homepage to receive your rate and the starter time ledger, the following is recorded:

ItemDetail
Email addressAs you type it, lower-cased.
Your calculated figuresNet Time Exchange Rate, gross rate, total annual hours, take-home after costs, and the salary-divided-by-2,080 comparison. Your individual inputs, such as salary or commute length, are not transmitted, but your gross income and your take-home figure can be reconstructed from the figures that are.
IP addressThe address your request arrives from.
Browser user agentThe browser and operating system string your browser sends, truncated.
TimestampDate and time of the submission, in UTC.

The speaking and workshop enquiry form

When you submit an enquiry on the speaking page, the following is recorded: your name, your email address, and whatever you choose to enter for organisation, role, format, delivery preference, date window, location, audience size and budget range, together with your message. Your IP address, browser user agent and a UTC timestamp are recorded alongside it, in the same way.

Both forms contain a hidden field that is invisible to people and is only ever filled in by automated bots. If it is filled in, the submission is discarded.

The dental calculator report form

The Dental Practice TER Calculator works out its figures in your browser as you type. To unlock the full written breakdown it asks for your full name, email address and phone number, and optionally your practice name and your role. That page states that those inputs are stored so the report can be re-sent and so that aggregate benchmarks can be built for workshops, and that your details are never sold or passed on. That is the same commitment made throughout this policy.

Server logs

The web host that serves these pages keeps standard access logs, which typically include IP addresses, requested URLs, timestamps and user agent strings. These are generated by the hosting infrastructure rather than by this site's own code, and they are retained according to the host's own schedule.

3. The calculators and the workbook

The Time Exchange Rate calculator on the homepage and the one on the Time Exchange Rate page run entirely in your browser. Your salary, hours, tax rate and costs are never sent to the server. They exist only in the page in front of you, and closing the tab discards them. The only moment anything you typed leaves your browser is when you press the button to submit your email address, and at that point only the figures listed in section 2 are sent. The analytics script in section 5 is separate: it records that the page was viewed, never what you entered into it.

The Dental Practice TER Calculator also computes as you type, in your browser. It differs from the two personal calculators in one way that matters: if you fill in its form to unlock the full report, the practice figures you entered are stored along with your contact details, as section 2 describes. Up to that point nothing has left the page.

The reader exercises save your entries in your own browser's local storage, under keys beginning tuc:ex:. Those entries are never transmitted to the server, are not visible to anyone but you, and are not backed up. They stay on the device you typed them on. Clearing your browser's site data for this domain deletes them permanently. The download and print buttons on those pages generate the file locally in your browser.

4. Why it is collected

  • To send you what you asked for. The mailing-list form exists to email you your result and the time ledger, and to tell you when the book is available.
  • To answer your enquiry. Speaking enquiry details are used to reply with availability and a fee, and to plan the session if it goes ahead. Enquiry details are not added to the mailing list.
  • To keep the site working. IP addresses and user agents are stored so that automated abuse can be identified and rate-limited. They serve no marketing purpose.
  • To understand which pages are read. See section 5.

Under the GDPR, the legal basis for the mailing list is your consent, given when you submit the form. The legal basis for handling a speaking enquiry is the steps taken at your request before entering into a contract. The legal basis for abuse prevention and basic analytics is legitimate interest in keeping the site running and knowing whether it is read.

5. Analytics and cookies

Every page on this site loads Google Analytics 4, measurement ID G-PF1ZYG3XMN, from Google's servers. It records which pages are viewed, roughly where in the world the visit came from, and what kind of device was used. It sets cookies in your browser, typically named _ga and _ga_<id>, to distinguish one visit from another. Google processes that data under its own terms as an independent controller for some purposes; its privacy policy is at policies.google.com/privacy.

Nothing on this site sets an advertising cookie, and no advertising or retargeting pixel is installed. If you block analytics cookies, or use a browser or extension that blocks the script, every page continues to work exactly as it does otherwise, including the calculators.

The typefaces on this site are served from this domain rather than from a font provider. Loading a page therefore does not tell any third-party font service that you visited.

6. Who else sees it

Your data is not sold, rented, traded, or shared for anyone else's advertising. Under the California Consumer Privacy Act, as amended by the CPRA, this site does not "sell" or "share" personal information as those terms are defined there.

Three categories of provider necessarily handle data in the course of running the site:

  • The web host that stores the site files, the database and the server logs.
  • An external email service, which transmits the automated emails sent to you and the notifications sent to the site owner.
  • Google, for the analytics described in section 5.

Beyond those, information is disclosed only where the law requires it.

7. How long it is kept

  • Mailing-list records are kept while the list is active, so that the book announcement reaches you, and are deleted when you ask to be removed.
  • Speaking enquiries are kept for as long as needed to answer them and to keep a record of an engagement that took place, and are deleted on request.
  • Dental calculator records are kept so that a report can be re-sent and so that aggregate benchmarks can be produced, and are deleted on request.
  • Workbook entries are never held by the site at all. They sit in your own browser until you clear it.
  • Server logs and analytics are retained on the schedules set by the host and by Google respectively.

8. Your rights

Whoever and wherever you are, you can email info@timeultimatecurrency.com and ask for a copy of what is held about you, ask for it to be corrected, or ask for it to be deleted. Replying to any automated email from this site also works, and is the fastest way to be removed from the mailing list.

California residents

Under the CCPA as amended by the CPRA you have the right to know what personal information is collected and for what purpose, the right to request deletion, the right to request correction, and the right not to be discriminated against for exercising any of them. As stated in section 6, there is nothing to opt out of regarding sale or sharing, because neither takes place. Requests are answered at the address above.

European Economic Area and United Kingdom

You have the rights of access, rectification, erasure, restriction of processing, objection to processing, and data portability, and the right to withdraw consent at any time without affecting processing that already happened. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with your national supervisory authority.

Because the site is operated from the United States, data submitted through these forms is transferred to and stored in the United States.

9. Security

The site is served over HTTPS, so what you submit is encrypted in transit. Submissions are stored in a database on the hosting account, and the automated emails are sent over an authenticated, encrypted connection to the mail provider.

No system is perfectly secure, and no one honest promises otherwise. The practical protection here is that very little is collected: no passwords, no payment details, no financial account information, and nothing at all from the two personal calculators unless you choose to submit the email form. The dental calculator is the exception, and section 2 sets out exactly what it stores.

10. Children

This site is written for adults making decisions about work, money and time. It is not directed at children, and information is not knowingly collected from anyone under 16. If you believe a child has submitted a form here, write to the address below and the record will be deleted.

11. Changes to this policy

If what the site does with data changes, this page changes with it, and the effective date at the top is updated. Material changes to how existing mailing-list data is used will be announced by email to the addresses affected rather than only posted here.

12. Contact

Questions, access requests and deletion requests all go to the same place:

info@timeultimatecurrency.com

Write from the address you used on the form, or tell me which address to look for, and the record will be found. A reply follows within a few days. If you need a postal address in order to make a formal request, ask for one at the address above and it will be sent to you.
